Our first fundraiser of the year kicked off Wednesday, and will conclude quickly! Students should have brought home two brochures, an information form and an envelope to collect money when the order is placed. All checks collected during the fundraiser should be made out to DEWEY BANDS. Thank you for your effort in helping to support the Dewey Big Red Pride Bands!
Palen rental night for our beginners was a success Tuesday night. For those who are still needing instruments: there are two options. At "palenmusic.com" you may fill out an online rental form under "Dewey" and receive the instrument at school after it is shipped. You may also rent or buy from anyone online so long as the brand is one of the accepted brands listed in the Middle School Band Handbook. See or email Mr. Tilus for any questions!
Welcome Back Dewey Bands! I am excited for the 2018-2019 school year. If I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting you, I look forward to it in the near future. The first day of school is this Thursday, August 16. Handbooks will be coming home with your student and will be due back signed Tuesday, August 21. We will be utilizing multiple platforms of communication including this website, facebook, twitter, email newsletters (beginning Monday August 20), and Remind101 text. A few notes to keep in mind as we get the year underway:
Marching Rehearsals resume Monday, August 20 with 8:00am rehearsal at the high school stadium and regular afternoon Monday rehearsals resuming Monday, August 20 from 3:30-5:00pm.
Our first Marching performances are Thursday, August 23 at the pep rally and Friday, August 24 for away football at Adair. STUDENTS MUST WEAR KHAKI SHORTS AND TENNIS SHOES. Your Dewey Band T-shirt will be worn, new T-shirts are en route and will hopefully arrive on time!
See you Thursday!
ONE TEAM. ONE SOUND. ONE RED.
Yesterday (Monday, Jan. 16), we took students down to Cleveland High School to audition for the Mid-East OK Band Directors Association (MEOBDA) honor bands. Students had been preparing this music for over a month, and we're very proud of all their hard work. At the end of the day, we had seven of our Dewey band students make the honor band rosters in some capacity. Congratulations to the following students (listed in alphabetical order):
Brittany Anderson - 1st Chair Trumpet, HS Band
Joseph Gaither - 4th Chair Percussion, JH Band
Traey Garrison - 2nd Alternate Euphonium, JH Band
Emma Lewis - 1st Alternate Clarinet, 7th Grade Band
Sarah Newland - 7th Chair Trumpet, 7th Grade Band
Kaylee Rolph - 10th Chair Trumpet, HS Band
Destry Roye - 1st Alternate Bari Sax, JH Band
The students who received a folder with honor band music yesterday will be traveling to Oologah High School at the end of the month for the MEOBDA Honor Band Clinic, where they will spend 2 days working with fantastic guest conductors, ending in a concert on the second evening. The clinic will be on January 30 - 31 (Monday and Tuesday). A full itinerary will be handed out in class the week before the event, and a schedule for the two days can be found at www.meobda.org. Please contact Mr. McKinney with any questions and/or concerns about this event.
I'm proud of ALL of our band students that auditioned for the honor bands yesterday at Cleveland, and again - congratulations to those seven students listed above - keep up the great work!
Now that we've got the new semester going here at Dewey, it's time to start thinking about a whole new series of events and performances for our band program! Here are the items to think about for the months of January and February:

Monday-Tuesday, January 30 - 31, 2017
Students who make it into the honor bands this month will leave after school on Monday for the MEOBDA clinic, and will miss school all day on Tuesday, ending with a concert on Tuesday evening. A detailed itinerary will be sent home the week before the clinic.

Our pre-contest concert will take place on Tuesday evening, February 28. The performance will feature the Intermediate Band, the Jazz Band, and the High School Band. More information will be sent home before the concert date.
These are only some of the events we have coming up this semester - continue checking in here and follow us on social media to keep up to date on everything going on with your students as the semester goes on. Remember: all performances are mandatory - please see our band handbook for more information on our attendance and grading policies, and contact Mr. McKinney with any other questions or concerns.
As we head toward the end of the semester, we've got a busy schedule for the bands here at Dewey Public Schools! We're looking forward to a great two weeks of performances leading into Christmas break - please keep the following dates on your calendars as we move through December.

Basketball Game: Dewey v Caney (KS)

As with all basketball games, dress code for the band is blue jeans, band shirts, and tennis shoes. Call time is 6:00 PM, and we will play for both the boys and girls games. Estimated time for the games to finish is 9:30 PM. Students will have 3rd quarter of both games to get food from the concessions stand, so if you are planning to purchase dinner at the game, be sure to bring cash with you.
Bear in mind that all events are mandatory for all band members involved, and unexcused absences will result in a lowered grade. Please contact Mr. McKinney with any questions or concerns about these upcoming events.
The Dewey High School football team has qualified for the first round of class 3A playoffs this season, and the HS Band will be traveling to Cushing this Friday to support our Bulldoggers!
An announcement with times and details was handed out on Wednesday morning (November 9) to go home, but you will find the same information listed below. Please pay attention to all dates and times, as this is the farthest the band has traveled from Dewey so far this year.
Friday, November 11, 2016
Dewey v Cushing
3:45 PM Call Time at the Band Room
4:00 PM Depart for Cushing High School
6:30 PM Arrival at Cushing
7:00 PM Kickoff for Dewey v Cushing

Dress for this playoff game is FULL UNIFORM with no hats, and we will not be performing our half time show this week. The arrival time back in Dewey at the end of the evening is only an estimate - please be respectful of the directors' time and have transportation arranged for prompt pickup after the game. Remember: all performances are mandatory for all band students, and an unexcused absence will result in a reduction in grade. Please consult the band handbook on this website for more details and contact Mr. McKinney with any questions or concerns.
Our competitive marching season came to a great close back on October 11 at the OSSAA Regional Marching Contest in Skiatook. We're very proud of what the band has accomplished so far this semester and can't wait to see what we can do together in the remainder of the 2016-2017 school year!
As we come to the end of the football season, there are some changes and announcements you need to keep in mind as we move forward.
Dewey @ Sperry - Nov. 4
This will be our final regular season football game. To make time for Sperry's senior night activities, we will not perform the half time show at this game. It is still very important that we play with our best sound as we support our team from the stands, and we need every single member to be there with us at Sperry. Call time at the Band Building is 5:00 PM, and the bus will leave at 5:15 PM. A handout will be sent home Tuesday with a schedule and other information for you to have on hand.
Playoff Game - Nov. 11
The Dewey HS football team will be traveling to a playoff game on Friday night, November 11, 2016. This game is mandatory for every Dewey HS band student, and more details (including schedule and departure times) will be sent home and announced here as soon as we know them ourselves. Please contact Mr. McKinney with any other questions or concerns.
Basketball: Dewey v Wesleyan - Nov. 18
Like last year, we will be playing at home Friday night football games with the HS Band. Our first BB game of the year is Friday, November 18, and call time will be at 6:00. This is mandatory for all HS band students, and we will be playing strictly pep band music in the stands.
